Dealing with relationship problems on Valentine's Day

Body language expert, Blanca Cobb, explains reasons that could be causing problems and how to talk to your partner.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Valentine's Day is supposed to be filled with love and romance. But for some couples, it can be a time of stress, anxiety, and even conflict. There are ways to navigate this holiday if you're having relationship difficulties right now.

Here are some common relationship issues couples might face on Valentine's Day. Some couples might feel disconnected from one another due to a variety of stresses such as childrearing, job, financial, and communication issues. Some partners feel unheard, unappreciated, or neglected.

If you're struggling with these issues, then it's important to talk about what's weighing on you. Talk from your perspective without making judgments, criticisms, or accusations. Then, give your romantic partner a chance to share their viewpoint. The conversation can be a way to reframe the Day to find ways to show each other love, compassion, and patience.

Some partners are afraid to show their emotions for fear of showing weakness. You shouldn't feel ashamed of your feelings toward a supportive partner. Hiding your emotions can breach trust and openness because it can create emotional distance between the two of you. Additionally, hiding your emotions can lead to resentment and bigger problems later.
