SURRY COUNTY, N.C. — A man is being held under a million-dollar bond after shooting at deputies in Surry County, according to the sheriff's office.

The Surry County Sheriff's Office said they received a medical call about a fall on Brooklyn Trail in Pilot Mountain. When deputies arrived, they found 62-year-old Allen Gray Beamon threatening harm to himself as well as to any law enforcement officers responding.

Deputies said Beamon was armed with a gun. Deputies said they gave numerous commands, telling Beamon to drop his weapon. Then, Sheriff Steve C. Hiatt said Beamon raised the handgun toward the deputies on the scene and fired.

Deputies said they fired back, hitting Beamon.

Deputies and the Pilot Mountain Police Officer immediately started aiding Beamon before Surry County EMS took Beamon to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

The Surry County Sheriff’s Office contacted the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigations (NCSBI). The NCSBI is investigating the officer-involved shooting, which is standard procedure. The deputies involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the internal investigation.

Beamon was treated and released from Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center for a gunshot wound.

The Surry County Sheriff's office said Beamon has since been arrested and charged with the following:

  • (2) counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill
  • (2) counts of assault by pointing a gun
  • (2) counts of resisting public officers

Beamon is in the Surry County Detention Center under a $1,000,000.00 secured bond with a court date of March 20.

This incident is still under investigation by the NCSBI.
