Autopsy findings unveil new details in case of rogue nurse in Forsyth County

The autopsy states the normal range of insulin is 6 to 27 uUI/ML. Lingerfelt's was found to be at 352.1 uUI/ML.

FORSYTH COUNTY, N.C. — The autopsy was released. for one of the two patients who died at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist in 2022.

Investigators said a rogue nurse killed them.

You may recall Johnathan Hayes was an ICU nurse at the hospital.

Investigators said he killed two women by giving them too much insulin and was charged with two counts of murder.

If you remember investigators claimed that two patients died in the ICU after experiencing low blood sugar.

Police said Hayes administered a lethal dose of insulin to Gwen Crawford and Vicki Lingerfelt.

We have received Lingerfelt's autopsy from the NC State Medical Examiner's officer.

The 7-page document states Lingerfelt's cause of death was due to complications of hypoglycemia due to exogenous administration of insulin.

On the second page, it goes into more detail saying she was not on any diabetic medications and her insulin level was elevated.

To put it into perspective, the autopsy states the normal range of insulin is 6 to 27 uUI/ML.

Lingerfelt's was found to be at 352.1 uUI/ML.

The documents go on to say she remained in a coma and incubated after this event until her death.

Search warrants claim both women were given over 100 units of insulin.

Those search warrants also said surveillance video captured Hayes taking insulin from a medication room.

Hayes was also charged with attempted murder after administering a nearly fatal dose of insulin to patient Pamela Little who survived.

As for Gwen Crawford's autopsy, we are still waiting on that report.

Prosecutors are pursuing the death penalty for Hayes.

A date has not yet been set for the trial.
