ASHEBORO, N.C. — UPDATE: Police identified the victim of the shooting as 16-year-old Pedro Ortiz. Ortiz died from his injuries on Tuesday, and as a result, the District Attorney's office will present upgraded charges for the teen suspect to a Grand Jury for indictment on June 3. Police arrested a 16-year-old male accused of shooting another teen at North Asheboro Park.

The shooting happened on May 3 around 9:30 p.m. Police said the victim, also 16 years old, was inside a car when the suspect shot him in the jaw/neck from outside the vehicle. Investigators said they believe the victim was not the intended target.

On Friday, authorities found the suspect staying at a home in Statesville. Officers with the Asheboro Police Department, the Iredell County Sheriff's Office, the NC SBI, and the Greensboro Police Department, took the suspect into custody without incident. He will be transported to the Cabarrus County Juvenile Detention Center.
