We explore Winston-Salem's 'The Hidden Town Project' unveiling the rich history of African Americans

A collaborative project seeking racial reconciliation by preserving the places touched by Black Salem residents.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — It's like the old saying goes, "You don't know where you are going unless you know where you came from."

We continue to highlight Black History spotlighting The Hidden Town Project in Winston-Salem, N.C.

The was a research project created to educate the public. It was discovered that the white Moravian enslavers, while happy to have the enslaved individuals convert to the Moravian form of Christianity, strongly opposed the use of any traditional tribal African spiritual practices that would result in a hybrid “Afro-Moravian” religious practice.

Thus, while “The Hidden Town Project” was the research project backing African American interpretation at Old Salem Museums & Gardens, it has largely shifted away from the project in favor of, simply, integrating African American History into all facets of programming here. Furthermore, any special programming related to African American history falls under “Living Legacy” programming now.

"That's what we're trying to tell the stories of things like The Hidden Town Project. It's all this mix of southern cooking and groups from various backgrounds coming together and we think that's pretty important," Jordyn Jones, Education Coordinator with The Hidden Town Project said.

The public is welcomed to come and check out Old Salem and all of its history. It is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 until 4 in the afternoon. For more information, click or tap HERE.
