Cleanup underway in Wilkesboro after EF-1 tornado

Crews cut down fallen trees and towed away debris. The National Weather

WILKESBORO, N.C. — The National Weather Service confirmed an EF-1 tornado touched down in Wilkesboro. Crews also surveyed the damage in Ronda but determined no tornado was there.

Either way, there's plenty of cleanup ahead.

"Thankfully, the property damage has been fairly minor, up with some shingles off and the one outbuilding destroyed. So thankfully, we haven't seen any significant property damage," said Phil Hysell with the National Weather Service.

Wilkes County officials said they haven't had any reports of injuries, but the cleanup process is going to take a few days.

Deemonte Leone with Facility Pros was out there cleaning up today.

"Back in 2016, another tornado came through here. It ends up being this area here always gets hit. We've had storm damage in other places," he said.

Brad Moffitt with Miller Tree Service was also on the job Friday.

"It's extremely gratifying feeling, because I have a family and Miller Tree, we pride ourselves, and trying to help people do the right thing, so that's why I'm here," Moffitt said.

The National Weather Service said if you had damage, you can report it to them and local officials.

"So we can make sure it's documented," explained Hysell. "That's really important for local communities, for example, when emergency managers apply for hazard mitigation grants, they need to know the frequency of thunderstorm and tornado events - that way, they can get that information if it is reported to the National Weather Service."

NWS said it's always good to have a weather safety plan in case a tornado comes to your area.
