16-year-old drowns at Jordan Lake during Memorial Day weekend

Deputies said the teen was swimming in a non-designated swimming area.

CHATHAM COUNTY, N.C. — A 16-year-old is dead after drowning in Jordan Lake on Sunday, May 26, according to the Chatham County Sheriff's Office.

Bryan Guzman, 16, was visiting Jordan Lake with his brother and a friend to celebrate a birthday.

Around 3:30 p.m., Guzman drowned near Ebenezer Picnic Area A, located at 452 Ebenezer Rd., New Hill, deputies said.

Deputies said Guzman's brother called 911 to report that he was in distress while swimming in a cove near the picnic area.

That cove is not a designated swimming area, according to deputies.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the Guzman family during this very difficult time,” said Sheriff Mike Roberson. “Our hearts go out to them as they mourn the loss of their son and brother.”

The Chatham County Sheriff's Office wanted to remind everyone of the following water safety guidelines this Memorial Day weekend:

  1. Wear a life jacket.
  2. Swim only in designated areas.
  3. Supervise children closely.
  4. Be aware of water conditions and your surroundings.
