Avoid fines: Don't let your grass grow above this height in Greensboro...

Tall grass is the number one code complaint the City gets. And fines start around $300.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Living in North Carolina you know one good rainfall like we had this week can make your grass grow to knee high almost overnight. It can be tough to stay on top of mowing it this time of year, but one viewer reached out and said their neighbor in Greensboro hasn’t mowed grass all season long. They wanted to know what the rules are in the City.

According to Greensboro ordinances here what is against code: "Any place of dense growth of grass, weeds or other noxious vegetation over twelve (12) inches in height, except for ornamental grasses chosen for features like color and form, such as switch grass, pampas grass, fountain grass, and bamboo"

“It's important because you don't wanna cause a nuisance. And tall grass is just that. Anytime you have tall grass at play, the rodents will come, the insects, the reptiles, and you don't wanna be a problematic neighbor," said Larry Roberts with the City of Greensboro's Housing & Neighborhood Development.

You can report an issue anonymously by calling 336-373-2111. The City will send out an inspector. Then they will give the property owner a notice saying they have 10 days to mow or the city will fine them for the service. And those fines are pretty steep, starting around $300 and up depending on the property's size.

You can learn more about code violations in the City of Greensboro at their "Code Academy" on May 29. You'll have the chance to talk with inspectors and ask them questions. That will start at 10 a.m. at Smith Active Adult Center, 2401 Fairview St.
