Greensboro Artist Paints Piece Honoring Three Historic Black Pageant Winners

Jaymes says she was inspired after watching Miss North Carolina Cheslea Kryst clinch the title as Miss USA realizing that history was made.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Jesca Jaymes is no stranger to the pageant world. She used to compete herself.

Now, she's a full-time artist working out of Artmongerz in downtown Greensboro. She typically paints pop art style pieces.

Jaymes says she was inspired after watching Miss North Carolina Cheslea Kryst clinch the title as Miss USA realizing that history was made.

"Oh my goodness this is the first time in pageant history and US history that all three queens are women of color," Jaymes said.

She watched in awe as Cheslea Kryst was crowned Miss USA joining Miss Teen USA Kaliegh Garris and Winston Salem native Miss America Nia Franklin.

"I was so happy. I was just like I have to do something," She said. "I’ve got to paint something that commemorates this moment in history."

So she got to work brush to canvas creating something that at one point wouldn't be possible.

"People don't know that in Miss America for the first 30 years African-American women were not allowed to compete in the system," Jaymes said.

Now,  there are three black beauty queens-- a sign of progress toward diversity and inclusion.

"I hope that we continue to move forward as a nation and that our idea of beauty continues to change," Jaymes said.

Miss America reached out to Jaymes after seeing it on her Instagram page The Artsy Siren.

Nia Franklin wanted to buy the painting. It already sold, but Jaymes plans to get it professionally photographed and give each queen a copy.
