RANDOLPH COUNTY, N.C. — Randolph County deputies charged a man they said brought a knife to the Trinity High School parking lot on Wednesday.

It happened during pick-up time. The sheriff's office said the man was in the admin parking lot with a knife in a case hanging around his neck. The SRO went to confront the man, who said he was there to pick up a student.

According to the release, the SRO advised the man it was illegal to have a weapon on school grounds and also noticed the smell of marijuana in the car.

The SRO reported the man initially did not follow orders and began to walk away, so he was detained. Deputies then responded to the school for assistance.

The man was then arrested and charged with misdemeanor possession of a weapon and educational property as well as misdemeanor drug charges.

The principal of the school sent out a message to parents, explaining what happened. School officials said the knife was not used in a threatening manner and at no point were any students or staff in danger.
