Thomas Built Buses workers prepare to strike, says the company can afford better pay

Hundreds of employees lined up outside the facility's two High Point locations.

HIGH POINT, N.C. — Some workers could soon strike in High Point.

With a blow horn and signs in hand, Thomas-Built Buses workers are preparing for a possible strike.

"We built these buses off our backs our blood sweat and tears. We deserve something," employee Chris Pratt said. "This is now or never for us. We may not have this opportunity again."

Pratt has worked for the Daimler Trucks North America-owned High Point company for 24 years.

"It was cutthroat. If you don't like it you can leave. We can find someone else to fill your job today. We had to do what we had to do to survive," Pratt said. "But now that we have a union it's a process to everything."

Pratt said things have gotten much better since getting unionized.

but he said the company's contract is up next week and they're bargaining for some changes.

"A record increase in wages, better benefits," Pratt said. "Health benefits better working conditions."

Workers practiced picketing outside of both High Point locations.

Workers said the company said the record 20% pay increase they're asking for isn't feasible for the work they do.

Those picketing didn't share how much they make but according to Indeed, the pay is between $14 and $23  per hour depending on the position.

Tonya Brown said they need equal pay across the board.

"We have sister plants one in Cleveland, NC, and Mt. Holly. They make more money than us and we're under the same umbrella," Brown said.

The practice strike took place after work hours so we were unable to get a response from Thomas-built buses or  Daimler.

We have reached out and are waiting to hear back.

Although Wednesday was practice workers said they're ready to walk out if their requests are not met by April 26.

"We're going to fight for what we want," Pratt said. "It's no turning back from here."
