Two GCS schools close for cleaning out of 'abundance of caution'

Northern Guilford High School & Gateway Education Center will be closed Friday, March 13th.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Northern Guilford High School and Gateway Education Center are closed Friday, March 13th for extra cleaning out of an abundance of caution, the school district confirmed with WFMY News 2.

Northern Guilford High School made the announcement on its Facebook page late Thursday night.

The Gateway Education Center also posted on its PTA Facebook page saying it would be closed for cleaning as well. We called the school and the administration confirmed they are closed today.

Both schools, again, say the cleaning is just an extra precaution.

The district explained the closure in this manner:

"At each school, we had one individual associated with the school exposed to someone who may have been exposed to the virus."

Superintendent Dr. Sharon Contreras clarified:

"We want to make clear so everyone understands that there was no individual at the buildings who showed symptoms of the virus, who is sick and is being tested," she said. "It was to clean the building because they are self monitoring because they were exposed to someone who may have been exposed to the virus."

Most parents we spoke with believe in 'better to be safe than sorry,' but want transparency from the district.

Northern Guilford mom Safira Vinson says they got a vague call at midnight explaining the school would be closed.

"I think they're prepared and doing what they need to do, it's just a matter of communicating everything that's taking place with parents and not giving bits and pieces of what's going on."

Right now, there are no confirmed cases of the coronavirus in Guilford County, according to state health officials and the CDC.

Earlier this week, Guilford County Schools released a plan on how it would deal with any cases of the coronavirus in the district should the issue arise.

On Thursday, the district also announced it was canceling field trips, limiting large gatherings, and restricting visitors as measures to try and stop the virus from spreading.
