WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A 70-year-old woman has died after a crash in Winston-Salem.

Winston-Salem police said they responded to a crash at the intersection of Peters Creek Parkway and Academy Street April 12 around 12:18 a.m.

During initial investigation, officers discovered a 2011 Hyundai was traveling north on Peters Creek Parkway when they ran a steady red light and then crashed into a 2017 Nissan that was driving west on Academy Street.

Police said the 2011 Hyundai then crashed into a 1997 Jeep which was stopped at the intersection facing south on Peters Creek Parkway.

Officers said the driver of the 1997 Jeep was uninjured in the crash and the driver of the 2011 Hyundai and the driver of the 2017 Nissan were taken to the hospital with apparent minor injuries.

Police said on April 13 they were notified of the death of the driver of the 2017 Nissan Betty Sheff Mitchell, 70.

The WSPD Traffic Enforcement Unit (TEU) then assumed investigative responsibility for the crash and has been conducting a follow-up investigation.

The Forsyth County Medical Examiner’s Office recently informed the WSPD TEU that Mitchell died as a result of injuries from the crash.
