Job Fair Etiquette | Why body language is important for the interviewer

When we think about jobs, the focus tends to be on the job seekers, but the interviewer plays a big role in the hiring process too.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — When we think about jobs, the focus tends to be on the job seekers, such as interview tips and body language strategies. However, the hiring manager or interviewer also plays a big role in the hiring process.

Hiring managers and interviewers should pay attention to body language because they're in a position of influence. And their body language impacts job seekers' impression of the interviewer and the company.

Here are common body language mistakes hiring managers make. A big mistake is interrupting the job seeker with body language such as head shaking, pulling away, grimace, which sends the message that what they're saying is wrong or not valued. Avoid disengaging body language, such as looking at your watch, door, computer screen, or phone. Looking everywhere but at the job seeker and making poor eye contact can give the impression of dislike or disinterest.

Here are a few body language suggestions for interviewers to show to help job seekers feel more relaxed and comfortable. Sit caddy corner to the job seeker because it's a more collegial position. Lean towards them to show interest in an interesting point that they're making. When you want clarification, then use open hand gestures.
