Geminid Meteor Shower | Another chance to see it late Thursday, early Friday

The later you can stay up, the better!

GREENSBORO, N.C. — There's one more chance to see the Geminid Meteor Shower on Thursday night into Friday morning. Here's everything you need to know about the "best meteor shower of the year!"

What is the best time to see the meteor shower?

The WFMY News 2 Weather Team says between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m. will be the best time for viewing. If you don't want to stay up that late or get up that early, you can try after 10 p.m., or better yet, after midnight. But the darker the sky, the better! WFMY News 2 Meteorologist Christian Morgan said it's possible to see a couple dozen meteors within an hour.

We heard from a WFMY News 2 viewer who was able to see 15 meteors within 30 minutes on Wednesday night.

Don't miss this. Dozens of meteors per hour possible in the Geminid Meteor Shower this week.

Where is the best place to watch the meteor shower?

For a better chance of a good show, get away from city lights and closer to a rural area. The darker the sky, the better for viewing. Face away from the nearest city. Light pollution robs meteors.

Which direction should I look for the meteor shower?

Most people think you have to look straight at the constellation Gemini, but that's not the case. Meteors can be seen all over.

What is the Geminid Meteor Shower?

The Geminid Meteor Shower happens every year in the middle of December. It's named after the constellation Gemini. That's where the meteors appear first in the sky during this shower. Many people refer to it as the "best meteor shower of the year" because it happens in wintertime when we have a better chance for clear, dry weather.

What is the weather going to be like?

Thursday night will be clear and cold with a low temperature of 26 degrees in the Greensboro, NC area - great conditions for viewing. Keep up with the forecast right here or download the free WFMY News 2 app to keep a check on the radar at any time.
