Vault Visit | Music superstar Prince dies from fentanyl overdose

A local radio station played his music non-stop for several hours.

This year... WFMY News 2 turns 75! So to celebrate... We're opening the WFMY News 2 vault.

On April 21, 2016, doves cried and people pulled out their purple in the wake of the news that musician Prince had died.

Here in the Triad, we stopped by Edward McKay on Battleground Avenue in Greensboro.

They were down to just one Prince album on the shelf by the time our crews arrived.

And a local radio station, 97.1 WQMG, played his music non-stop for several hours.

"I thought to myself there are so many positive moments that Prince gave us. He made us fall in love, fall in love again want to love. Name any beautiful emotion, the Prince gave it to us, so I decided, let's celebrate that part of Prince and celebrate his life."

Over the course of his life, Prince released 39 studio albums, 104 singles and 136 music videos.

We won seven Grammys and an Academy Award for Purple Rain.

He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004.

Prince was 57 years old when he died in his Minnesota home.

We now know that his death was due to an accidental fentanyl overdose.
