Moravian baked goods pop-up shop to open in Winston-Salem

Moravian Bake Shop will sell cakes and cookies. They are using old Moravian recipes passed down through the generations.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A new Moravian bakery is popping up just in time for the holidays.

Moravian Bake Shop will open next week in Winston-Salem. The Wilkerson family is behind the venture.

Chelsi Wilkerson and her brother Kane said her family is following in the footsteps of their great-grandfather. Dewey Guy Wilkerson helped popularize Moravian baked goods across the south.

It started at his bakery Dewey's Bakery in Winston-Salem in 1930.

"He really developed a great following in Winston. When people couldn't pay, he would just tell him pay when you can with the wink of an eye," Chelsi Wilkerson said.

The Wilkersons sold Dewey's Bakery in 2011 to a new owner. But the Wilkerson family is getting back into the game this year.

"We are really focusing on our core heritage with our Moravian cookies and our Moravian sugar cake. So that's really what we are coming out with this season," Chelsi Wilkerson said.

They'll use recipes passed down through the generations to keep the legacy going.

"One of our slogans is, 'Pride and passion in every bite.' Details matter to us. Quality matters to us. And we really want people buy into our products. We want them to feel that," Kane Wilkerson said.

At a time when things are dark, the Wilkersons hope their baked goods will bring a smile to your face.

"We hope that we can bring some joy to families around here and we just wanna honor our family history and our heritage with those that we've lost, Wilkerson's that have dedicated their lives to this," Chelsi Wilkerson said.

The pop-up shop will be around till the end of the year. It opens Monday, November 23rd at 10 a.m. It's located at 3443 Robinhood Road Suite B.

They also plan to open a second shop next week sometime at Hanes Mall near Belk.
