Operation Air Drop Volunteers Deliver Supplies to Florence Victims

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WFMY)--Volunteers are getting creative to help out some of the hardest hit areas by Florence.

Operation Airdrop is a nonprofit that organizes volunteer airplane owners and pilots to deliver supplies to areas cut off by Florence. The Texas-based organization formed shortly after Hurricane Harvey to help deliver supplies, and now a local officer volunteers his time in the wake of Florence.

Winston-Salem police officer, Lieutenant Rick Newnum, is one of the many pilots spending their off-time flying East, and he says he's just glad to be helping out victims who need it the most.

"A lot of these places are not accessible by road, and here you have this small plane coming in with goods, and yesterday in Elizabeth town, I had kids 4 and 5 years old all the way up to adults running up to the plane, giving me hugs, smiles helping me unload everything, it was such a pleasure to be able to help"

Pilots as far away as Kentucky and Arkansas have come in to help drop supplies after Florence.
