FORSYTH COUNTY, N.C. — Story update May 10, 2023: Troopers have confirmed the names of the two people that were killed in a head-on crash in Forsyth County Monday:

Jayce Alexander Haverkos, 19, and Madison Lynn Grotschel, 18, were both hit head-on by a driver in a stolen car on US-74 westbound in Forsyth County.

A head-on crash involving a stolen vehicle kills three people in Forsyth County Monday, according to the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO).

Around 12:21 p.m., a caller reported someone was stealing their 2004 silver Mercury Grand Marquis from their home on Old School House Road, according to FCSO deputies.

A deputy was reportedly circulating the area and traveling north on Baux Mountain Road and spotted the stolen car traveling south near Dolphin Drive.

The deputy turned around and initiated a traffic stop, but the suspect continued south on Baux Mountain Road, exiting onto US-74 westbound, according to FSCO deputies.

At the bottom of the entrance ramp, the suspect made a U-turn and drove into oncoming traffic. The suspect crashed head-on into another vehicle, according to FSCO deputies.

The deputy reportedly got out of his car and attempted to provide aid with the help of another deputy.

The driver of the suspect vehicle, as well as the driver and passenger of the other vehicle, died on the scene, according to deputies.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the loved ones of the victims of this tragedy. Any loss of life is a loss to our community; our prayers are with the families and friends who are grieving,” said Sheriff Bobby F. Kimbrough, Jr.

The NC State Highway Patrol is reportedly investigating the crash.
