Man charged with first-degree murder in connection to missing man, deputies say

GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. — After nearly two years since Stuart Lee Carter went missing, a man has been charged with his murder.

On Sept. 20, 2022, Stuart Lee Carter was seen for the last time. He was reported missing on Sept. 23. 2022, according to the Guilford County Sheriff's Office.

On April 25, deputies charged Skyler Chance Kearns, 27, with First-Degree Murder and Concealment of Death. Deputies said the charges were connected to Carter's disappearance.

Kearns was held under no bond until his first court appearance. During his first court appearance, he received a $1,000,000 bond. Kearns remains in custody, deputies said.

On April 26, 2024, as part of the investigation, detectives and the Triad Blood Hounds Group searched a wooded area on Small Road near Randleman Lake Road in Randolph County. 

Deputies said the group found unidentified human remains.

The remains have been removed from the scene and are awaiting examination. Deputies have not positively identified the remains as belonging to Carter.

The investigation is ongoing.
