RANDOLPH COUNTY, N.C. — A Michigan man connected to a string of cellular tower attacks in North Carolina has been arrested, according to North Carolina deputies.

A sheriff's office in Montgomery County said 33-year-old Eric Gene Cundiff, of Grand Rapids, is accused of a multi-county copper theft operation where there was $10,000 worth of property damage to a cellular tower.

On Jan. 29, detectives said they received reports about damage to a cellular tower where $5,000 worth of copper was stolen. During an investigation, detectives uncovered that these attacks also happened across Randolph and Guilford counties.

Deputies said they used surveillance footage to identify a suspect and issue warrants for Cundiff on Feb. 5.

"This case exemplifies the dedication and expertise of our detectives in pursuing justice and safeguarding our communities," said Sheriff Pete Herron of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office. "Copper theft not only poses significant financial losses but also risks disruption to essential services, such as telecommunications. We are committed to holding those responsible accountable for their actions."

Cundiff was charged with the following:

  • Felony Breaking and Entering
  • Felony Larceny
  • Damage to Property
  • First-Degree Trespassing
  • Damage to Property to Obtain Non-Furious Metals

Cundiff was placed under a $250,000 Secured Bond.

This investigation is ongoing.
