Man in custody after police officer shoots at suspect during attempted home break-in

Greensboro police said they received a call Thursday afternoon around 3:15 p.m. about a man trying to break into a home.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Greensboro police said an officer shot at a suspect who pointed a gun at the officer, but the man was not hit by gunfire.

Police said they received a call Thursday afternoon around 3:15 p.m. about a man trying to break into a home in the area of Wayside Drive and Belfield Court. The officer said the man pointed a gun and that’s when the officer fired their weapon. Other officers arrived and said the man pointed the gun at himself a number of times. They also said the man walked around the neighborhood with the gun and refused to drop his gun. The Greensboro Police Department said officers then used less than lethal force options to attempt to detain the man. They said Behavioral Health Response Team officers were able to take the man into custody. They said the man was injured in the encounter and was taken to the hospital. They said no one was struck by gunfire including the man in custody.

They have not said if the man will face charges at this time. The officer involved in the incident will be placed on administrative duty as it’s a department policy.

The Greensboro Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division is conducting a criminal investigation into the incident. The Professional Standards Division is conducting an internal investigation to determine whether Greensboro Police Department policies were followed.
