GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. — NTSB investigates deadly plane crash by US 421: Here's what we know so far

Guilford County Sheriff's Office said one person died in a plane crash along the Guilford/Randolph County line Tuesday. Two people were on board the single-engine Vans RV-12, according to the FAA.

The crash happened around 11 a.m. south of the Greensboro Executive Airport. The wreckage could be seen on the side of Highway 421 near Monnett Road.

Guilford County Sheriff's Office said pilot Kurtis Dale Williams, 52, of Kernersville and James Anthony Foecking, 39, of Randleman were on the plane at the time of the crash.

Deputies said Williams died at the scene of the crash. Foecking was taken to UNC-Chapel Hill Hospital, where he is in stable condition.

The plane was said to be an "experimental aircraft".

“Keep family in prayers and thoughts," said  Anthony Vogt, the owner of the Greensboro Executive Airport.

Guilford County Emergency Services Hazmat Unit, NCDOT, State Highway Patrol, Southeast Volunteer Fire Department, and Guilford County Sheriff's Office were all called to the scene.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the cause of the crash.

Chief Chris Sizemore with the Southeast Volunteer Fire Department said GCSO will remain on the scene until NTSB arrives on Wednesday.
