Woman dies after collapsing in cell in Rockingham County

Deputies said the woman showed no signs of distress before collapsing in the cell.

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. — A woman is dead after she collapsed in her cell in Rockingham County Wednesday.

Rockingham County deputies said a woman was brought to the Rockingham County Detention Facility around 4 a.m. and placed in an observation cell.

Deputies said she was being monitored by detention officers and medical staff when she collapsed in her cell around 7:40 a.m.

Detention officers, medical staff, and Rockingham County Emergency Services provided CPR and other life-saving efforts to the woman.

Unfortunately, the woman died as a result of her medical emergency.

Deputies said foul play is not suspected in the woman's death.

At the request of Sheriff Sam Page, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation has been contacted and will perform a follow-up investigation as is standard procedure.

The name of the woman has not been released as next of kin is still being notified.
