21-year-old charged after multiple car crash on I-40 near Winston-Salem

Garrett Kneen ran into the back of the disabled tractor trailer on I-40 East near Winston-Salem, troopers say.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A 21-year-old man is charged after crashing into tractor trailer truck on I-40 in Winston-Salem Thursday, troopers say. 

All lanes of I-40 East between Stratford Road and Hanes Mall Boulevard were shut down for an extended period after the crash that involved a tractor trailer and two cars. 

The crash happened at 5:20 a.m. Thursday. 

A disabled trailer truck was parked on the right shoulder of I-40 near Exit 189.

A Dodge truck, driven by 21-year-old Garrett Kneen, was going east on I-40 ran off the road and crashed into the tractor trailer. 

Parts of the motor from Kneen's car was ejected after it got back on the road and flipped over. The ejected motor hit an oncoming Ford truck that was also going east on I-40. 

The Ford truck flipped on its side. 

Kneen and the Ford driver were both taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. 

Kneen was charged with failure to maintain lane and also received a registration violation. 

This investigation is ongoing.
