Section of Business 40 to Close This Weekend for Fourth Street Bridge Work

NCDOT officials say they're closing the section of highway because the demolition may cause pieces of concrete to bounce on the roadway.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- A portion of Business 40 will close this weekend so crews can work on the Fourth Street bridge construction.

NCDOT says crews will be moving large equipment and parking it on Business 40 while they demolish and remove a portion of the substructure of the bridge.

NCDOT officials say they're closing the section of highway because the demolition may cause pieces of concrete to bounce on the roadway.

On Saturday, Dec. 1 at 5 a.m., east and westbound lanes of Business 40 will close between Cloverdale Avenue and Peters Creek Parkway. They will reopen Sunday, Dec. 2 at 4 p.m. The closure is west of the part that is being demolished.

Eastbound traffic will get around the weekend closure by using Exit 4 at Cloverdale Avenue, going to West First Street and winding up on Peters Creek Parkway.

Westbound traffic will exit at Peters Creek Parkway, then use West First Street and a short section of Cloverdale Avenue to get back to Business 40.

All through-traffic should use I-40, which bypasses all of the work zones.

During the day, officers with the Winston-Salem Police Department will be placed at intersections to help control the signal lights to aid in the flow of traffic.

The Fourth Street bridge is scheduled to reopen in January 2019.
