GREENSBORO, N.C. — Guilford County Schools held an emergency Board of Education meeting on Friday afternoon. The Board discussed further actions in response to the coronavirus pandemic, including the possibility of closing schools.
A decision was not reached as the Board continues to evaluate the situation and understand what resources would be needed to make the switch to online learning.
GCS says if online learning needs to be utilized because of coronavirus concerns, the district has ordered 5,300 iPads for students to take home. According to GCS, 23% of its students are without technology at home.
The meeting also included a recommendation to give the Superintendent more authority to waive Board policies as necessary to implement appropriate response measures to COVID-19.
Earlier this week, the school system released its coronavirus response plan, detailing how it would handle closures and cancellations should COVID-19 reach the area.
There are no cases of coronavirus in Guilford County, according to state health officials and the CDC. Local health officials say they are prepared for the potential of coronavirus reaching our area.
