Live Weather Blog: First snow of the season brings thousands of power outages, storm damage

Several school districts were on a delay Tuesday due to black ice concerns.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Monday was a wild weather day in the Triad. It started with heavy rain and howling winds and turned into our first snow of the season. On Tuesday, several Triad school districts were delayed due to black ice concerns, and thousands of homes were still without power after more than 24 hours. 

WEDNESDAY, JAN. 5: Day 3 of outages

 8:00 p.m. -- As of this report, only a few hundred triad families are still without power. Here's what Duke Energy's outage map is reporting:

6:30 p.m. - The North Carolina Department of Transportation said it's sent out 65 trucks to the Triad to spread salt on busy roads and interstates. They plan to have night shift workers continuing to treat the roads as ice forms.

6:10 p.m. - A powerline is down in the area of West Friendly Avenue in Greensboro. Make sure to use caution in the area. 

6:00 p.m. - Official snow total at PTI Airport today: 2.0 inches.

5:51 p.m. - The coldest night of winter will arrive Monday night. 

5:26 p.m. Power outages continue to be restored in the Triad.

Triad 911 communications centers have been busy with calls all day. Here are some of the calls that the Winston-Salem Police Department has taken since 4 a.m. Monday:

  • 45 trees down
  • 30 transformers blown
  • 25 downed power lines
  • 5 reports of standing water on major roadways

1:55 p.m. -- Many viewers across the Triad are sharing snow photos of their kids during the first snow of the season with WFMY News 2. 

1:00 P.M. -- Snowing now, but what's next? WFMY News 2 meteorologist Monique Robinson says we'll need to watch for icy conditions on roads this evening. RELATED: Yes, it's snowing now, but what's next?

Aaron Moody with NCDOT says crews have 65 salt trucks out in the Triad area spreading salt on primary roads and interstates. They plan to have a night shift working tonight to spread more salt, and will have a better idea of their plan later Monday afternoon.

US-52 North is closed in Winston-Salem at mile marker 109 after a multi-vehicle rollover crash.

11:45 A.M. -- The latest on COVID-19 testing sites in the Triad. 

  • The COVID-19 testing site at Four Seasons Town Centre in Greensboro will open at 1 p.m. Monday. 
  • The COVID-19 testing tent at UNC Rockingham Health Care in Eden will remain closed all day Monday.

6:50 A.M. -- Greensboro police say multiple streets are closed due to heavy flooding, downed trees and power lines. Drivers should treat all intersections without power as a four-way stop.

6:40 A.M. -- Guilford County Schools Restart and Extended School classes are canceled Monday due to widespread outages and weather concerns, GCS announced. The schools affected are Bessemer Elementary, Cone Elementary, Falkener Elementary, Allen Jay Prep, Ferndale Middle, Welborn Middle, Western Middle, Bluford/Peeler, Frazier Elementary, Gillespie Park Elementary, Vandalia Elementary, Washington Elementary, Wiley Elementary, Eastern Middle, Northeast Middle, Hairston Elementary, Jackson Elementary, Swann Middle, Brooks Global Elementary, Foust Elementary, Alderman Elementary, Johnson Street Elementary, Montlieu Academy of Technology, Oak View Elementary, Sedgefield Elementary, and Fairview Elementary.

A viewer in Boone also shared video of snow coming down there. The Triad is expecting a burst of snow anytime now and between midday. The snow isn't expected to stick to roads, but we could get around one inch on the ground. 

6:00 A.M. -- Guilford County 911 says they're getting a lot of calls this morning about trees down as well as some power lines. No major roadways are impacted at this time.

Major traffic situations at this time include: 

  • High Point -- I-74 West closed between Exit 66 (Johnson Street) and Exit 65 (US 311)
  • Union Cross -- NC 109 closed in both directions between Devor Road and Maranda Road

5:00 A.M. -- Strong storms are bringing heavy rain and strong winds to the Piedmont Triad. 

Right now, Duke Energy reports around 35,000 customers are without power across the Triad.
