SUNDAY, AUGUST 30, 2020 

9:45 p.m. - Alamance County officials announce all Alamance County courthouse buildings will be closed to the public Monday and Tuesday.

“This decision was made in order to protect both court staff and visitors while the Alamance County Health Department collects information and provides case investigations for current COVID-19 active cases,” Alamance County said.

Officials said all matters scheduled to be heard on Monday and Tuesday have been postponed.

12:55 p.m. NCDHHS reports that there is currently a total of 917 hospitalizations due to COVID-19 in North Carolina.

12:54 p.m. According to the NCDHHS, there are 166,127 lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in NC as of 12 p.m. Sunday.

1:00 p.m. North Carolina health officials report record-high of 2,585 new COVID cases. Per the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, 2,218,149 tests had been completed in the state by Saturday.

11:00 a.m. Free Drive-up COVID19 Testing in Greensboro today (10am-1pm) at Shiloh Baptist Church, 1210 S Eugene St, Greensboro, NC 27406, brought to you by Old North State Medical Society (ONSMS). Testings are free and open to the public. Test results returned in 3-5 days.

3:21 p.m. - North Carolina has more than $900 million left in federal Coronavirus Relief Funds from the federal CARES Act. 

Governor Cooper’s budget lays out a plan to use this money to continue the state’s response to COVID-19.

  • $175 million for critical public health services including: $25 million for testing and tracing; $50 million to target rural and historically marginalized populations; and $40 million for early childhood services
  • $49 million to build a state strategic stockpile of personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • $132 million to help K-12 public schools to protect students, teachers and staff and ensure students most impacted by COVID-19 receive support
  • $200 million in aid for local governments
  • $50 million to establish an emergency grant program to expand high-speed internet access
  • $27.5 million to combine with other funds to create a $50 million relief program to support NC businesses with rent, mortgage and utility relief
  • $18 million to combine with other funds to create a $33 million grant program for Historically Underutilized Businesses (HUB) that have been left out of other support programs
  • $25 million to provide equipment for health care and first responder workforce programs at community colleges to continue the state’s pipeline of necessary, qualified workers
  • $25 million to research obstacles to reliable, rapid COVID-19 testing
  • $50 million in direct aid to food banks, emergency feeding organizations, and community organizations for food and nutrition assistance

6:47 p.m. - North Carolina State University identifies seven new clusters. Three are on the main campus.

6:28 p.m. - COVID-19 drive-thru testing event announced by appointment only. 

In an effort to keep our community healthy and expand COVID-19 testing, the Guilford County Division of Public Health (GCDPH) is pleased to work together with Guilford County Emergency Management to host COVID-19 testing at GCDPH's 1100 East Wendover Avenue, Greensboro location. 

This is a self-swab test. Those who are planning to attend are asked to wear a face covering. Testing will be done by appointment only Wednesday, August 26, Thursday, August 27 and Friday, August 28. Must be scheduled in advance by calling 336-641-7527.  

6:24 p.m. - A Sheetz employee in Greensboro tested positive for COVID-19.

5 p.m. - Triad COVID-19 Outbreaks Update

Four new coronavirus outbreaks in the Triad, health officials report. 

  • Southfork on Jonestown Roadin Winston-Salem
    • 2 total cases (both staff), no deaths.
  • Alamance County Detention Center
    • 5 total cases (2 inmates, 3 staff).
  • Mallard Ridge Assisted Livingon Highway 150 in Clemmons
    •  2 total cases (both residents), no deaths.
  • Central Continuing Careon Newsome Street in Mount Airy
    • 2 total cases (both staff), no deaths.

There are now 29 total confirmed cases of COVID-19 at Jacob's Creek Nursing and Rehab Center in Rockingham County. At Westwood Hills Nursing and Rehab Center in Wilkes County, seven additional people have died. The Westwood Hills location now has 107 total confirmed cases and 8 deaths.

Health officials reported two new case spikes in Montgomery County. At Sandy Ridge Memory Care, one person has died and the virus has spread to 23 new people. At Autumn Care in Briscoe, a 21 case spike was reported.

Two outbreaks in North Carolina have ended. The COVID-19 outbreaks at Arbor Acres United Methodist Retirement Community and Spring Arbor of Thomasville are considered over by health officials.

4:40 p.m. - Another child tests positive for COVID-19 at Lexington daycare.

4:00 p.m. - Students test positive for COVID-19 at Cornerstone Charter Academy. In a letter to parents, the school said a parent tested positive for the virus after bringing their kids to school last week. The students passed screening protocols to enter the building but tests later confirmed they too were positive.

10:08 a.m. - Alamance County Detention Facility deals with outbreak

The Alamance County sheriff’s office confirmed it's managing an outbreak at the county detention facility. Two inmates tested positive last Friday. 

Three staff members also tested positive. The sheriff’s office said NCDHHS defines an outbreak as two confirmed cases in a congregate living facility. 

According to a press release, the Alamance County Detention Facility and health department are working to mitigate the outbreak.
